Ebony

African Ebony, now known as African blackwood (Diospyros melanoxylon), is a very heavy wood generally jet black in color with variable gray streaks. It is very durable and hard to work with but its rich color makes it excellent as an accent and it is often used in musical instruments.
Ebony (Diospyros ebenum) is native to India and is also a dark black wood with similar properties as the African blackwood.
Macassar Ebony (Diospyros celebica), shown on the right, is dark brown to black wood with contrasting beige or gray streaks. Its striking figure makes it valuable for use as decorative accents. |
