American Black Walnut, (Juglans Nigra) grows in the Eastern US and Canada. It is a dark wood varying from a purplish black to a rich red brown, varying from tree to tree. It is a very durable wood often used in making furniture. Claro Walnut is a highly figured walnut grown on the West Coast of the US and Canada. European Walnut, also know as English Walnut depending on its origins, has similar properties as Black Walnut.

Brazillian Walnut (Ocotea porosa) or Imbuya is not related to walnut, but is a South American wood with a deep chocolate brown color.

Peruvian Walnut (Juglans neotropica) or Nogal is also not related to walnut, but is a South American wood a rich dark wood similar in color to the North American walnut but lacking the light colored sap wood.

NWFW does not sell wood; only items made from wood. Please see our links page for wood retailers. If you would like detailed information on specific woods used in any of our items, please contact us.

Northwest Fine Woodworking encourages the use of woods from sustainable yield resources.
